Can You Trust Theodore / Ted Sullivan Of Grand Rapids, Michigan / MI?

July 22, 2008 by Bill Hamilton I'm posting this information about Ted Sullivan of Grand Rapids, MI so you can make your own determination if this is the type of person you'd like to employ, be friends with, and/or loan money to. My experience has not been good, but you can read my story and make your own decision. In the early 2000s I frequented a restaurant where Dawn Tufflemire was a waitress and she became my favorite waitress. I briefly met Ted Sullivan, Dawn's boyfriend, several times during those years. Around 2005 (give or take a year) I informed Dawn that my house needed painting. She immediately said that Ted operated a handyman business and that the could paint my house. Within a few weeks I hired Ted and Dawn and over a weekend and they did paint my house and did and excellent job. It was here that I got to know Ted Sullivan. Other than perhaps a quick "hi" or two, I didn't see or talk to Ted Sullivan again until March of 2007 when he showed up on my door step asking me to loan him $800. Ted said he just got a new job but was behind on bills. I thought it was funny that he'd be asking me, a person whom he hardly knew and hadn't seen in 2-4 years, for a loan. I figured he'd "burned his bridges" with family members and friends, and that's why he was now reaching out to people he hardly knew. He also insisted that I not tell Dawn Tufflemire about the loan. So I thought it was a bad risk of him repaying me in cold hard cash, but I had a ton of work to do around the house and figured he could easily work it off in the evenings and weekends if he couldn't repay the debt. I had him sign a note stating that the $800 was a no interest loan with $200 payments to be made every two weeks. Ted made the first payment of $200 on time and when the 2nd payment was due Ted told me he couldn't pay off the loan as he was broke, just got fired from a new job, and was again looking for work. So we agreed that I'd forgive the debt if he built a brick support wall in my yard even though he said he'd do it for $300 if I bought the materials. I said, "No. $300 was too cheap but I'll forgive the $600 debt if you build the wall and dispose of the old railroad ties". Ted agreed and started working on the wall within a few days. It was right at this time that Ted said he was hired by The Master Plaster Patcher of Grand Rapids, Michigan on Hall Street. So Ted worked at Master Plaster Patcher during the day and came in the evenings and a weekend to complete the wall. Before he was finished, Ted again asked me for a loan; This time for $1,200. He said he was months behind on rent and that if he didn't pay up real soon he and Dawn would be homeless. Since he just got a full-time job but hadn't been paid yet, and I had other projects that needed to be done, and Ted had been faithful in working off his other $600 debt, I agreed to loan him the money. This time I put a clause in our written loan agreement on May 7, 2007 that he had to pay me $200 every week, or could work around my house at $20 per hour doing odd jobs (I thought this was more than generous as he said Master Plaster Patcher was only paying him $11 an hour), or any combination of money and time totally $200. If Ted was behind in payments or working off the debt, I'd be adding a $5 penalty for each day that he's late in repaying the loan. Well, Ted immediately was late with his first payment and I reminded him of the $5 penalty fee. He told me not to worry about it that he'd make it up by working on a weekend. Well that never happened as Ted Sullivan NEVER came to work off his debt and eventually only paid me $800 towards his $1,200 debt over a 9 week time period even though the whole loan was suppose to have been paid off in 6 weeks. He had a 3-day weekend over Memorial Day and could have worked 10 hours each day to have paid off his debt, but instead he told me he was tired from regular work and only wanted to lie around those 3 days with Dawn Tufflemire. In late July 2007 his $5 a day penalty fees were pilling up and I knew he had no intention of paying them off. So I sent him a letter and told him that I no longer was giving him the option of working off the debt at $20 per hour. Pay me the rest of the money plus the $5 penalty fees that had piled up, or I'd take sue him in civil court. I no longer heard from Ted so in late November I finally sued him in 61st District Court. (Note - Before my court case I called 2-times and emailed The Master Plaster Patcher to confirm Ted's employment with them, but the company never returned my inquiries). Ted never showed up for the court case on 12/31/07 so the judge awarded me a judgment of $1,633.46 which included the $400 he owed me, my costs for filing and having paper served, and $1,000 for the penalty fees that had piled up. Ted Sullivan never responded to this ruling so I again had to sue him in civil court on 1/23/08. Again Ted didn't show up for the court hearing so the judge assigned the case to Court Officer. You can view these court records yourself by going to the 61st District Court's website at https://www.grcourt.org/CourtPayments/, type in Ted's legal name of Theodore Sullivan, list him as a defendant, beginning date of 01/01/2000 and yesterday's date. This database only goes back to 01/01/2000. From 01/01/2000 - 12/31/2007 Ted Sullivan has had 5 criminal cases and 2 civil cases in just the 61st District Court's jurisdiction, so I wonder how many other criminal and civil court cases Ted Sullivan has had over the years with the 61st District Court and other U.S. courts. As of July 22, 2008 I've only received a check for $200 from the Court Officer. (They take a 1/3 of whatever they recover.) I'm told by the court office that Ted Sullivan has recently made another payment towards my civil case and says that he'll make another payment soon. I've heard that statement many times over the past year. The one good thing is that the court officer has told Ted that he may not drive his old 1991 S-10 pickup truck until he's paid his debt. Up until 7/20/08 the truck has been parked since around March 2008. Now you make up your own mind. Is Theodore Sullivan of Grand Rapids, MI trustworthy?
